Inspired by the Burgundian winemaking style and the methods that have been honed for centuries, our wines are not meant to be flashy or trendy, but rather to express the elegance, balance and complexity of an old world wine.

WINEMAKING PHILOSOPHY

From kicking-off barefoot on an icy, cobbled-together rugby field in Paarl - once a small South African town - to traversing the vine-covered slopes of Burgundy, and voyaging back to dig his heels into the soil of Hemel-and-Aarde - this is the story of South African sportsman, Burton Francis, and his journey that birthed Francis Wines.

“Looking at my journey, I’ve realised what a strong symbol soil has been and remains to be. It is where seeds sprout, roots dig deep and fruits ripen. It is also where decay, erosion and decomposition can take place. Soil represents the cycles of life, growth and transformation - the changes that shape our existence. When I think about the moments that marked me, I see soil in different forms and colours. I see the “klippe-kou,” cobbled-together, thorny rugby field under my feet as a boy, where I learned to work hard and appreciate what I have. I see the green grass of the rugby field in France, where I discovered a new culture, I see the earth beneath the vineyards from Burgundy to Hemel-en-Aarde, where the dream of a wine brand was born and fulfilled.”

Our Purpose

At Francis Wines, our passion extends beyond crafting exceptional wines—it embraces the heart of who we are: wine and rugby. But our purpose is so much more. We are driven to make a lasting difference in our community, empowering the younger generation to discover their identity, their potential, and their path in life. As a former professional rugby player in South Africa & France, rugby is deeply rooted in my soul, and I want to share that passion with the young boys on the field today. By building meaningful relationships with these players and combining that with an education in wine, we aim to ignite the same passion I’ve carried throughout my life.

Our vision is broad, but we believe it starts with development programs that nurture not just future rugby stars but young men with a strong sense of purpose and love for both the game and entrepreneurship.

Founded by Burton, the visionary owner of Francis Wines, Francis Academy merges his passion for wine with his lifelong love for rugby. Burton's journey from the rugby field to winemaking inspired him to create a foundation that supports young rugby players in achieving their dreams on and off the field. Through Francis Academy, 5% of every bottle sold is dedicated to providing essential equipment, balls, and other resources—ensuring players are well-prepared for matches and practice. The Academy also offers educational programs, guiding young athletes toward promising futures within the wine industry.
